Product Description

The BMC Trailfox 02 shares a frame with their world-beating Trailfox 01. The difference is found in the rear triangle. Rather the differences. The rear triangle is made of triple-butted, hydroformed Al-13 aluminum. And is also spaced for Boost.

Boost is the new spacing standard that widens the rear triangle and the fork. This move has three benefits. The first is greater lateral stiffness of the wheel and the frame. The second is stronger wheels thanks to better dishing angles. The third is the ability to run wider tires, or in this case, switch to 27.5” Plus, if you want your ride to be super-duper sure-foooted. The Trailfox 02 bikes come built with 29er wheels, but now you have the option to further tune your ride. If you decide to swap in 27.5” wheels, you can run a max tire width of 3.0”.

The thing about Plus wheels and tires is that the outer diameter matches the outer diameter of 29er wheels and tires. The wheels, no matter which way you choose, are big. Big wheels sometimes have a mind of their own. Not when they’re paired up with BMC’s Big Wheel Concept (BWC) that teaches the big hoops how to behave. With short chainstays, a low bottom bracket, long top tube, and short stem, the wheels are agile, while still providing the rolling advantages big wheels should.

The BMC Trailfox platform is a bike that not only tames the fun side of the mountain, but makes the work side fun. For the descents, this is a 150mm-travel full-suspension bike. For the ascents, this is a short-chainstayed climber.

The Trailfox came about thanks to the Enduro World Series. The BMC Factory Trailcrew Team needed something that could excel on descents, but was still something they enjoyed pedaling. So, they decided they needed 150mm of suspension to absorb the bumps, they needed big 29er wheels because they roll better, they needed an Advanced Pivot System (APS) to find the right degree of sensitivity in the rear end and keep the linkages as simple as possible, they needed short chainstays to climb well, and a long front-center measurement to keep the screaming descents to an barely audible pitch.

With those basic parameters, they went to work designing the frame. Thanks to their advanced computer modeling system, they mocked up countless geometries and tube shapes and layups to figure out what worked best, at least in theory. And when they had narrowed down the possibilities, built some up for pro feedback. And with that, a little more tweaking and then the Trailfox you see here came into existence. The shapes have been optimized for fighting torsional flex, at the fork and crank and rear wheel, shapes that are only possible thanks to their ability to mold carbon-fiber. The steerer has a 1 1/8” to 1 ½” taper for the ultimate in stiffness while still working with most stems on the market. The top and downtubes are flattened and wide for strength. The bottom of the downtube has an integrated molded rubber bumper. The top tube has been dropped to the point that it’s just above the shock, providing excellent stand over clearance.

As this is BMC, they utilize the BB92 standard because it both lightens up the frame and allows them to build as wide as possible. They also favor the 31.6mm seat post diameter for both lightweight and because it works well with dropper posts. They allow you to route up to five cables/hoses internally through the frame. That’s for your rear derailleur, rear brake, shock, dropper post, and/or whatever else you think you can fit. The frame works with 1x drivetrains only. The rear derailleur hanger is replaceable and is available both as a standard and direct-mount type. The rear thru-axle is 148x12mm. The brake mount is their Natural-Born Postmount, which allows you to replace destroyed threads. It fits 180 or 203mm rotors.

As bikes that go down fast need more gear, there’s still more. There are integrated ISCG mounts to protect the frame and keep the chain railed. There is an easily-seen initial load (aka sag) indicator for quickly dialing in the sag when you first settle on the saddle. The right chainstay has an injection-molded protector.

The included shock is Cane Creek’s DB Inline with150mm of travel. DB is short for Double Barrel, and some people see it as a revolutionary offering. The design brings the performance of their coil and air shocks into a smaller unit, so it can fit in frames with tight clearances. The shock is also incredibly tunable. It offers independent external adjusting of high and low speed rebound and compression. Thanks to the design and tuning, and abetted by the APS, this shock allows you to ride bigger and go deeper.

They recommend a 1 1/8” to 1 ½” tapered steerer 150mm travel fork with 51mm of offset.

A Medium frame weighs in at 2820g including shock and hardware.

The BMC Trailfox 02 opens up your ability to not only have fun, but to go more extreme.
