Product Description

The M has been the downhill rig leading Intense Cycles since the start. It has seen a major evolution with this current rig, the M16C. It’s the culmination of years of racing, learning, redesigning and repeating. This is their latest World Cup rig, and it’s been run through the rigor of competition, so you can have confidence that it has the features and manners of a bike that knows speed better than you. Chris Kovarik, Shaun Palmer, and Claire Buchar all rode prototypes and signed off before it was ready for release.

You might be familiar with the M16A. There, the frame and swingarm were fabricated out of aluminum. Here, the C is for carbon-fiber, and the frame and swingarm are EPS-molded unidirectional carbon. Even the upper link is molded from carbon. It shaves two pounds off the aluminum version, with identical geometry, and no loss of performance. That’s the beauty of the more-precise shapes and more-precise application of material that carbon-fiber affords. One of the cool features of the improved precision is how there’s an extra brace between the right chainstay and seat stay. And they could even design for an integrated downtube protector, sitting in the frame just above the bottom bracket, and an integrated chainstay protector, also built in to the right chainstay.

In terms of geometry, they’ve worked in the current interest in super-short stems and taller head tubes by pairing it with a longer top tube and super-shallow head angle-63.5-degrees across the range. The seat tube angle is 73.3-degrees across the range. The geometry helps you feel on top of the bars while still sitting back enough to  have confidence dropping down walls. The result is a bike that gets more confidence the faster you go.

The suspension is JS Tuned, meaning a new design from the founder, Jeff Steber. The rear suspension can be adjusted between 8.5” (215mm) and 9.5” (240mm) of travel, just by pulling a bolt, moving the upper link, replacing the bolt. The shorter travel option will feel a bit firmer throughout the travel. As the lower parallelograms should tell you, this is a virtual pivot point design. The pivots move on both angular contact and radial bearings, with bearings both double-sealed and the lower bearings possessing dual grease ports, both an effort to improve performance and increase bearing life. . Intense goes a step farther with their design, making the coil spring size-specific to their frames. And if, after extensive tuning, you find it is too stiff or soft, you can purchase a softer or harder replacement spring to further improve the suspension.

They've also worked hard to improve what they can on the front suspension. The tapered head tube can work with both 1 1/8” straight steerers or 1 1/8” to 1.5” tapered steerers. They assume double-crown forks and 200mm of travel. Their frame geometry chart also specifies forks with 594mm lower leg-length and 42mm offset. The head tube has integrated bumpers to protect the frame from the fork, and the bumpers also double as ports for threading derailleur and brake cables internally through the frame. The rear axle is Collet axle 157x12mm for greater room and lateral stiffness. Wheels are 27.5” (650b).

The frame is tricked out with all the latest standards. They decided on a threaded bottom bracket shell, as well as ISCG 05 mounts. The frame is designed to work with single-chainring drivetrains only. They specify a 31.6mm seat post to minimize weight. The brake mount is international standard set for a 200mm rotor. The rear axle is 157x12mm for greater room and lateral stiffness. Wheels are 27.5” (650b).

The Intense M16C rewards the attentive, aggressive rider, by making it easier to go faster with greater confidence.
