Product Description

The Smith Optics Overtake Helmet looks like nothing else on the road, because nothing else on the road has origins anything like the Overtake. Having stormed the bike helmet scene only a few short years ago, Smith continues to take lessons derived from developing world-class ski and snowboard helmets and applying them to cycling. The Overtake is both a cosmetic and conceptual showcase of their engineering and design prowess, unleashed on the unsuspecting world of road bike helmets.

The Overtake is an aero road helmet that is fast, light, and ventilated. Being relatively new to the cycling world, Smith took a fresh look at how to keep the head safe. They decided that instead of relying completely on EPS foam, as most helmets do, they’d use two different technologies, EPS and something called Koroyd. Koroyd is a mass of small, rigid, straw-like tubes molded together in the same direction. The tubes are light and compact, but incredibly tough, so you need less Koroyd to equal similarly protective EPS. Koroyd’s also hollow, of course, so the “straws” can be oriented to both aid in air intake and air exhaust. The Koroyd panels are oriented so that the panels in the front half of the helmet allow air in, while the panels on the back half of the helmet help push air out. Smith calls this specific application of Koroyd their Aerocore technology. With the protection doubling as venting, Smith made the pads as small and unobtrusive as possible to maximize airflow. They sit on the secondary retention system only where they’re absolutely needed.

The Koroyd material also contributes to the relatively compact volume of the helmet, allowing it to sit closer to the head and assume a more sleek, minimal profile. This, along with the EPS panels, help make the Overtake the second-most aero road helmet on the market. It’s a close second behind the Specialized Evade, but thanks to Koroyd, it cools much better. Finally, it’s worth noting that a big advance in helmets came when designers and riders figured out how to dock sunglasses in vents. Most aero helmets, with fewer vents, lost that ability. Smith brings it back. Sunglasses can be mounted upside down, upside up, or backwards, depending on your preference. There’s a ridge on the hard plastic that the temples will flex against, holding them in place.

Ultimately, the Smith Optics Overtake Helmet looks cool, because it is cool – but it’s also incredibly strong, fast, and safe, making it a smart choice for those seeking an all-around excellent road helmet with minimal sacrifice.
